Today, the air is icy; at least it's not raining.

It almost hurts to walk outside without the protection of a coat. Even with that protection, my cheeks and ears sting and turn bright red as I walk to my classes. I try not to go outside for any other reason, which is a damn shame because the nature here is deceivingly beautiful. It will look like a warm autumn day through a window, but upon stepping outside you find out that nature has lied to you.

I met my two close companions in weather like this.

At free periods in highschool, all of my friends and others would eat lunch and hang out outside in the parking lot. We said it was because there was no room in the cafeteria for us, which was occasionally true, but I think it was more than that. I think it was a mixture of things, really.

You see, we liked to be different.

We liked being our own people, doing our own things and not caring what others thought. Some of us would do anything to be different from the norm. This could be why we ate outside, because we wanted to be different from everyone else, or maybe because everyone else shunned our difference.

Anyway, my two friends would stand outside, sometimes even when they were obviously cold.

At first, I would timidly step outside and stand in the background, then quickly return to the cafeteria to escape the cold. But then I found the two extremely funny and nice, and that I enjoyed being around them. I would brave the cold for longer periods of time just to be a part of their conversations. Eventually, they admitted it was too cold for them too, and they came inside with me.

Well, not really with me. But it's all the same.

When it pours, I am reminded of the simplest summer I ever had.

It was full of fun, adventure, and my friends. Everyday, I would spend the day with somone. I felt popular; I felt wanted. Every week, there was a party to go to, because we all wanted to see all of our friends before we went our separate ways.

When it pours, I remember a specific adventure of that summer.

I was at the mall with two good friends that I had really connected with only at the start of the year. We had decided to go to the mall to hang out and escape the rain.

That summer, I was a mallrat.

I had never thought it could be so fun. Stereotypically, mallrats are bums that have no lives and no money. But we weren't that way; we were just out to have fun. The three of us went to the mall often, sometimes with other friends and sometimes without. We would spend our time lounging in the chairs at the mall's center, walking around to random stores to try on clothes we'd never buy, and play hide and seek. It was a blast.

This one particular time, my two friends were tired of carrying around their hoodies. They said they were too hot to wear them inside, and didn't want to continue holding them. They asked to put them in my car. I had told the two that once they got to my car, they would want to wear their hoodies again because the cold rain would soak them immediately. They insisted that the hoodies went in the car, so we went to the door.

We ran.

You could see the rain pelting the ground all around you, freezing everyone it touched and drowning everything else. At first we couldn't find the car, but by the time we got to the parking space and hopped into the car, we were drenched.

The two looked cold, and I asked them if they were. They denied, of course. Stubborn men; they said that the mall would be warm.

The rain was five times louder in the car.
After a minute of mental preparation, we ran back.
Upon re-entering the mall, I think we bought lunch.

It's raining.

But then again, it's always raining here. You'd think that they would make the brick and stone walkways more even so that the puddles are more avoidable. You can't walk outside without having your feet soaked.

I need a pair of boots.

I've been to the store many times to buy them, but I've never found a pair I liked. So far, I've tried Walmart and Target. Target had a better selection, but Walmart was cheaper. Maybe I'll just wait until winter to get boots. It's not like the rain is that bad, especially if I hide in my room. Although, I have to go outside in order to get food.

Maybe I'll go barefoot.

I think it's too cold for that. Even though it's not winter yet, if I go outside without a coat, I am cold. My teeth chatter and goosebumps make their way down my arms and legs. I can't stay outside for more than ten minutes. It's just too cold.

I am a wimp.

I'll admit it. I don't scare too easily (unless someone picks me up or a snake slithers by...) but my body is weak. I get sick often and become cold easily. I have a crate in my room filled with all sorts of over-the-counter drugs to help me make it until summer, where I may only get sick once that season.

I love summer.

My favorite month is July. It's the warmest month of the year, filled with hotdogs and watermellon and swimming and fireworks. I especially love the night sky in July. The air is cool and the atmosphere is completely clear. Sometimes, it feels like the sky could swallow you, leaving you to stare at the stars forever.

So, I've finally gotten a facebook. And in all honestly, I hate it. It's very glitchy and unreliable, and I don't understand why people keep using it if there's so many problems with it. Everyone just adapts to the glitches and life goes on. NO! That's not how it's supposed to work! If there's a problem, you're supposed to report it or stop using the program until they fix it! That's how things are CHANGED. Anyway, the only thing I like about it is that I can keep up with my friends, which is nice. However, I do not like the feeling that I can be stalked at any time (and yes, I have fixed my privacy settings).

In other news, I've graduated! I'll be attending SUNY Plattsburgh in the Fall and my first day of classes is August 30th. I'm excited, but also sad that I'm leaving all my friends behind. I doubt we'll lose touch, though (especially with this damn social networking craze helping us out).

There have been many parties and events that I have taken pictures of since the prom, so if you'd like to take a look at those, (you guessed it!) they're on facebook.

Z-Day II: Return of a Legend (ReturnersGaming Charity Marathon)

Well, it's that time of year again: time for another ReturnersGaming Marathon!

The marathon will begin on March 5th at 6:00pm CST and go through to March 9th at 1:00am CST at the earliest. We're going to be tackling 13 Zelda games in 79 hours while raising money for Doctors Without Borders. They are a group that provides aid to victims of violence, neglect, and catastrophes such as armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care and natural disasters. More information can be found here.

Deathwish by Rob Thurman

So today, I'm here to review Deathwish by Rob Thurman. *wonders why there's a bold option, italics option, and strikethrough option for text, but no underline option.) So, here we go.

Here's what's on the back cover:
"Half-human Cal Leandros and his brother, Niko, are barely getting by with their preternatural detective agency when the vampire Seamus hires them. He's being followed, and he wants to know by whom. But the Leandros brothers have to do more than they had planned when Seamus turns up dead (or un-undead).
Worse still is the return of Cal's nightmarish family, the Auphe. The last time Cal and Niko faced them, the Auphe where almost wiped out. Now they want revenge. Cal knows that before the Auphe get to him, they will try to destroy everything and everyone he holds dear. Because for the Auphe, Cal's pain is a pleasure.
And they're feeling good."

So here's a little back story for you. This is the fourth book in a series of five (the fifth one coming out on March 2nd, I believe).

In the books previous, you find out that Cal is only half human. His mother had paid sex with a being called an Auphe. An Auphe is basically a demonic creature that may have possibly been the first creature to ever walk the earth. They have long sharp teeth, long nails, pale skin, almond-shaped eyes, pointed ears, and long fine hair, and can rip holes in time and space from their world to Earth. Supposedly, in myths and legends, the Auphe were portrayed as elves (I think) because of their ears and eyes. (A theme in Thurman's novels is the fact that human's never get myths right. Throughout the series, you meet many creatures who are in myths and legends, but are portrayed completely different than their actual appearance.)

Because of this, Cal finds out very early in life that he is not normal. His mother would constantly tell him he's a worthless monster, and often times an Auphe (his father) would watch him from the livingroom window. However, throughout all of this, Cal's brother Niko was by his side to protect him and take care of him.

When Cal was twelve years old, the Auphe kidnapped him to their world, and kept him for two years (in their world's time). When Cal returned, he blocked out all memories of it happening and was only left with the fact that he was two years older to show that it actually happened. From then on, Niko made the two of them travel all over, to run from the Auphe. They moved around in New York city, hoping to never be captured by the Auphe again, for Cal's sanity's sake.

In Deathwish, the book starts off with Niko being cornered in Central Park while training (a place where a lot of mythical creatures hid when they couldn't blend into society) by the Auphe. Cal runs and they fend them off together, but they finally realize the Auphe's true intention, to toy with them.

Throughout the novel, the worry of the Auphe is an underlying theme, but the two know that there's no use stopping their lives because of it. So when Promise, Niko's vampire "girlfriend", finds them a job helping protect a fellow vampire, Seamus, they take the job.

In all of Rob Thurman's books, you never know what to expect, besides extreme sarcasm (which tones down the severity of what goes on in the novels). All the mythical creatures you think you know are portrayed much differently than you'd expect, which makes the books refreshing as well as entertaining. What makes them truly amazing, is that all the settings of her books are actual places in America, so even if what you're reading is unbelievable, it all has a sense of reality to it because it's set in an existing place.

In this particular book, there are so many plot twists that you honestly have no idea where the story will go. In any story, unpredictability is appreciated. At one second, you're reading about them helping Seamus, at another, they're being tricked by someone they barely knew, and at yet another, they're being attacked by Auphe.

I'd recommend Deathwish, or any of Rob Thurman's books, to anyone who's looking for entertaining adventures with enough sarcasm to make you laugh.

^ Most adorable thing, ever. I love when guys do that. :) It makes them like...2x as attractive as you previously though they were (hint, hint, men out there), unless you don't really like/know them at all and they're kind of creepy. Then it's just kind of creepy. (hint, hint, stalker men out there)

Anyways! It's weird to see that my last post is about halloween :P That feels like it was father away than it actually was.
So, recently I went to my uncle-on-my-dad's-side's house (woo!) for my aunt's fifty somethingth birthday, and it was really fun :) I have some pictures of it if anyone wants to see, just comment on this post and I'll throw em up if anyone's interested.

That same day, my great aunt on my mum's side died. It was a really weird death, because it's almost as if she expected it to happen. She had recently recieved open heart surgery, and due to a complication of her gall bladder exploding, she died. Today was the funeral, which was nice (but I hate funerals) and I pretty much met my mum's side of the family while I was there. I didn't realize her side of the family was sooo large. I've never seen any of them before besides my grandma and other sister! Crazy business. Anyway, while at the after funeral thing where you eat food, my mum's... cousin (?) said he went into my great aunt's house and found a shop rite bag full of christmas cards that she didn't mail out. So I got a Christmas present from her, even though she's not around to give it to me. That's really... odd. But nice all the same. She dated the card, which is weird, because she's never done that before. She also REFUSED to wait until after christmas to have the surgery. It's almost as if she knew she had to go... crazy stuffs.

Anyways, enough of this morbid talk. I hope everyone has a good holiday, whatever you may celebrate, and I'll post again soon hopefully. :)

Yea, yea, I know. I've been lazy. EXTREMELY lazy. So, time for an update!

Currently, I'm working on getting all my video's from Florida onto youtube, but they kinda really suck because my camera's file type isn't compatible with WMM, which makes me sad. So, sorry! I have parts one and two up if you guys want to check them out, but I will post them all here when I finish them all.

Next, I have three video's from Arienne's Sweet Sixteen (Renaissance theme) also on youtube. I have one more to upload, and then I will post THOSE as well as some pictures here for you all to see, but only after I get all the Florida stuff up.

Finally, I've already taken some pictures today for "Halloween" because we all wore our costumes to school to show off. I will take more tomorrow and post ALL those after Arienne's party pictures AND the Florida videos. I will also have a proper rant in that post about the nature of slutty ("Sexy") costumes. -.- Bah.

In other news, I'm done applying to college!!! WOO!!!! All I need to do is send my SAT scores out and make sure my teacher's/guidance counsellor send the recommendations out, and I'm good to go. :) OH! Speaking of guidance counsellor, Mr. Bergin (my guidance counsellor since I was a freshman who retired at the end of last year) was at school today! Apparantly he was doing some presentation in the Guidance Office, so he wasn't dressed for Halloween, but it was good to see him! For those who know about my blue packet ordeal, Mr. Bergin totally forgot he had mine, and said it's either located in his desk which is "downstairs" somewhere or at his home in... wherever he lives now. Arizona?

That's really all I can think of for now, I'll try and get as much stuff done as I can this weekend so I don't stay all backed up with all of these posts. :P Have a safe Halloween peoples! Have fun!

Why's the Good Music Gone?

Alrighty, so I was in the car on the way home from Lake George today, and I heard a song on the radio. At first, I thought it was Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap, but to my dismay, it was some other song with just a part of her song in it.

Now, my question to you is, why are good songs being replaced/remade with crappy ones? Imogen's song was originally a heartfelt song about white men taking over the Northern continent way back when, but this new song was just another love song with one of her verses as the chorus. Why?

Bella Voce

For those of you who don't know, Bella Voce is the best choir in my school (and I'm pretty sure it ranks pretty high up in the state's rankings as well). It's an acapella choir, and I've been trying to get into it since freshman year.

So... WOO!!!! First rehersal is next Wednesday.

School has begun

So, my blog's still looking very summery (with all the bathingsuit pictures and such) so I figured I should update. I've already been in school for a week now, and it's not too bad so far. This year, I'm taking: Law and Economics, Creative Writing (funniest class EVER! I love it so much xD), AP Calculus (I think I'm going to fail... we're still doing stuff from precalc that I KNOW and I'm confused because of how my teacher teaches... I wish we had more than one calc teacher.), PE (duh. I have a small gym class this year though, I'm usually stuck with the ones with about 100+ kids in it...), Graphic Arts, Chorus (duh <333), and English at DCC (Dutchess Community College).

For the college class, it's taught at the highschool, but it's technically considered a college level class, so we get IDs to DCC and stuff like that. It's pretty cool. I think this is only the second year this program has been offered to our school. It's also pretty cool because I only had to pay about $50 for my textbook (at the school you pay around $90) and I don't have to pay for the course. I have a feeling even if I have to do a lot of college writing for that class, it will be worth it because Mariana and Sam are in it with me (my two best friends).

I had originally also taken AP Physics, but after the first day, I dropped it. Firstly, because I didn't *need* the course; I had already taken regular physics. Secondly, the Regents is the final exam, and I don't want to take that thing twice. Taking the AP is good enough for me. Thirdly, although I liked my last year's physics class (the subject and the people in it), it's in the past and taking the class again won't make it as fun as it was before. Also, AP is a LOT of work, and in all reality, I'm just too lazy. Fourthly (is that a real word?), in order to take physics, I had to take Chorus only every other day instead of everyday like it's supposed to be. At first I didn't think it was a problem, but after the first day I was having music class withdrawls. :P I love my class and I love to sing, even if I do complain about it all the time because of the teacher or because of the songs. I just couldn't live happily without singing, therefore that class MUST be in my schedule everyday. Lastly, practically the only reason why I took that class was because Sam was, and although we were in the same class, it didn't really seem worth it (we have many other classes together throughout the day, thank God! Took the school long enough to put us in classes together :P).

My favorite classes so far are Creative Writing, Law, Chorus and Graphic Arts. Chorus is a given, Creative Writing is the funniest class I've ever been (because of the people in it and because of the teacher herself. It's WONDERFUL) in plus I have it with Sam, Law is fun because of the debating going on, and Graphic Arts is fun because I love the teacher and Ozzy's in it. (Ozzy's a good friend of mine.)

Now I'm going to go eat some ice cream. If I think of anything, I'll post it another day.

Oh! Today I played with bubbles during my free. Why, you ask? Because I can. It was fun. :P

Every year, my family takes a trip to Lake George for a week or so. So here's an overview of the trip!

The Fourth of July

Hehe, so this post is kinda... almost a month late, but I had to wait for the pictures from my friend in order to make it. You see, my friend's dad has an awesome waterproof camera, so he took all the pictures when we were out on the lake.

Alrighty, so just like every other year, during the 4th, my family takes a trip up to Lake George to the trailer we own up there. The campground is pretty much like a little town, meaning that everyone knows mostly everyone else, and we're all on speaking terms. I also happen to have made friends up there (most of them live near Albany), so we end up having lots of fun.

So during that vacation, I went tubing with my friend Hannah, her friend Sandi, her brother Andrew, our friend Ryan, my brother Charley, and Charley's and my friend Brian. (and her dad of course) Here's some pictures!

After that, while we were loading the boat back onto the trailer so we could bring it back to the campground, it rained while it was sunny. After the sun went away and the rain stopped, this beautiful thing showed up.
So on the night of the third, we saw fireworks! Some lady who was apparantly friends with Hannah's dad somehow was selling glowing swords (kinda like lightsabers) so most of us bought one (I think they were only four or five dollars) and played around with them. Pictures!

To Do List

So this is my 'to do' list for the rest of the summer, since it seems as if I've gotten nothing done. I can take pictures of the artsy things I complete if people want to see.

1. Finish reading The White Dragon by Anne McCaffrey (her books are recommended for fantasy lovers!)

2. Write SOMETHING. (Anything you lazy bones!)

3. Obtain a job.

4. Make a video for the Final Fantasy Returners Marathon. (www.returnersgaming.blogspot.com for those interested in looking it up before I make said video.)

5.Fix LOTR bag so things don't fall out of the bottom. (See past post for pictures.)

6. Make a new bracelet. (My bracelets are made of embroidery string.)

7. Finish coloring my poster. (It's like one of those fuzzy posters, but without the fuzz.)

That's all I've got so far. I'm going to go run my finger under cold water; it's throbbing because I burnt it on the oven earlier. >.<

Yesterday, I went to Channel 103-1's Big Day Out in Saratoga, so I made this video about it. The lineup was Malestrom, Chevelle, Sum 41, Shinedown, the Offspring, and Staind. I WISH the Offspring went last so they could encore, but they didn't so... yea.

New GIMP Designs

Well, here are the three most recent. The reason there are three is because the first one I made was originally with the cute little guy in the second render. I decided that the background and the render didn't match at all, so I replaced it with the only render I had with the same color scheme, which ended up being little Axel and Roxas. The other two with cute little Hunny and his cake were made at the same time, cause I couldn't decide which one I liked more to keep, so I kept them both. So, here we go:

Alrighty, so while I was looking for pictures of the Door to Moria to embroider onto a bag, I found that video that was in the last post. So just a half hour or so ago, I FINISHED THE BAG!

It's made out of an old Aeropostle sweatshirt that I got for $15 about 3-4 years ago that I don't wear anymore. I figured that instead of throwing it out, I could make something out of it, so I put the Door to Moria on it. Now... that may have been the dumbest idea I ever had, because the elven letters were REALLY HARD to embroider. >.<

As you can see, I took the picture of the door and printed it out on my computer. I then pinned it to the bag where I wanted and started embroidering. Little did I know that it would take FOREVER to get the paper out from under the sewing. (I thought I could just pull and it'd rip and come off, but noooo, pulling rips out the stitches too. -.-) I also didn't think that my stitchings would look bad underneath the paper if they looked good on top of the paper. So although the brown string that outlines the trees is quite messed up looking, here's the final product!

I may go back at some point and touch it up to make the brown look better, but overall, I think I did a great job for someone who can't embroider well. All that's left is to put the strap on, which I think I'm going to take one of the sleeves and cut it up into fourths and sew them together. (I would have used both sleeves, but one of them I already used for the bottom of the bag.)

Music in the Parks 09

So Friday and Saturday, our music department (minus the freshman band, chorus, and orchestra) all went on a trip to Massachusetts where there was a Music in the Parks competition. Friday was when the actual competing was, at Holleyoak High School; Saturday was when the awards were given at Six Flags New England. The trip was a blast and we all had a lot of fun. Concert Choir was awarded First Place in the AAA division with a rating of Superior. Women's Choir was also awarded First Place with a rating of Superior, but I don't know what division they were entered in. We were also awarded for having the best choirs. I'm not sure the awards given for the bands, because there were so many different types and divisions that I lost track. However, I know that there was one school that kept beating us in that category. (Their school began with an N, I forget the name.) The Phil Harmonia Orchestra was awarded First Place with a rating of Excellent, and Symphony Orchestra was awarded Second Place. (I think, we were kind of confused with those categories and divisions as well.) Here's some pictures!

Junior Prom

Woo! Prom has come and gone, and although it was fun, I'm glad that I don't have to worry about it anymore. Now I have NYSSMA and the SATs to look forward too. Woo...
Overall, the prom was very enjoyable and pretty, although being sick hampered things a lil. (Hope you can't tell in the pictures!)

I couldn't help but take pictures of the totally AMAZING corsage thingie that my mother gave me. It's so shiny...

Well, last weekend was my brother's birthday, so all of our friends came with us to the bowling alley and we played two games. He seemed to have a lot of fun, and was sad when it was over. My Birthday

So, the day before my birthday (the 24th), Sam invited me over to her house and she held a little party for me. It was so much fun, and I'm so glad she loves me enough to throw me a party.

This is Dan after Sam, Val, and I dressed him up in some of Sam's clothes (they're guys clothes technically) and gelling his hair with some old L'Oreal (sp?) hair gel. This was the best picture we got of him. Yay lighting!

Straight No Chaser

Some of you may have heard of the Acapella group, Straight No Chaser. Recently, they signed with Warner Music Group. On their youtube page, it says,

Now, I am looking for my favorite song from them, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which was posted on December 18th, 2007. There are a few fan videos from the shows they've done, but it's not the same as the original video (which WMG insisted they remove) mostly because Steve Morgan doesn't go as high, and the quality of the videos stink. I was very upset to learn that all their old videos were removed. In my opinion, shouldn't all of their old videos stay, because they were posted BEFORE they signed with WMG? I can understand not letting them keep videos up AFTER they signed...

So I figured, "Ok, fine. Let them have their way. I have a dollar and fourteen cents left in my iTunes account, they'll have the song there for me to buy." So, I opened my iTunes and searched for "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by Straight No Chaser. Guess what? IT WASN'T THERE. So now, not only can I not hear the original on youtube, but I can't even buy it on iTunes. On one of their videos made especially for YouTube, "The 12 Days of Christmas (2008 version)" (I believe it's called), it says in the sidebar to go to myspace to hear the original 12 Days of Christmas.

Now, my friends who know me, also know that I HATE myspace and facebook and all of those internet communication sites. Although, I was so desperate to hear the song that I actually went to myspace and looked up Straight No Chaser's page. Guess what? IT'S NOT THEIR EITHER.

So now, I'm left with nothing of the song. THANKS A LOT WMG. I mean, if they're going to make them get rid of the videos, at least make the song BUYABLE. -.-

I think that Straight No Chaser should fight WMG for the rights to have their original preformaces publicized the way they want. WMG should NOT have control over the music recorded BEFORE they were signed.

What can someone do to get this song the way it was originally sung by Straight No Chaser?

Unfinished Stories

Unluckily for me and my readers, I have so many unfinished stories. Why am I telling you this? Because it's the first thing I thought of to write here. Right now I have two unfinished stories that have not been read, and two unfinished stories that HAVE. (I'm terrible) For some reason, if I write a story that's more than a couple of chapters long, I get writer's block and then give up. Go figure. And then sometimes I'll just get too bored to finish, or I'll get sidetracked. Unluckily for me, I also happen to procrastinate on my homework. Today I'm supposed to be doing a history essay to bring up the grade of the last quiz I took. (It was HORRIBLE, and I was doing so well...) Now, I've had the whole weekend. However, on friday, I went to the school dance. On Saturday, I wasted the whole day until 7, which was when I had to go sing at our local tree lighting ceremony. And now today, I'm sitting here writing a blog entry and will shortly be going christmas shopping with my family and my best friend.
Yup, I'm a DEFINATE procrastinator.

Hopefully I'll be able to do the essay RIGHT when I get home, and then I'll finish writing one of my stories. (This will be the agenda for today, but my agendas NEVER work out right.)

Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I thought I would give you all a bit of insight for thanksgiving. According to Joseph Farah, this is the real meaning of Thanksgiving. Take it as you will, but I believe that the true meaning of Thanksgiving is to give thanks, not to eat turkey. So all you mothers out there who are fretting over your overcooked turkey; relax, take a seat for a second, and give thanks that you HAVE a turkey, albeit a dried up one.

There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding the people responsible for the American Thanksgiving tradition. Contrary to popular opinion, the Pilgrims didn't wear buckles on their shoes or hats. They weren't teetotalers, either. They smoked tobacco and drank beer. And, most importantly, their first harvest festival and subsequent "thanksgivings" weren't held to thank the local natives for saving their lives.

Do you know there are public schools in America today actually teaching that? Some textbooks, in their discomfort with open discussions of Christianity, say as much. I dare suggest most parents today know little more about this history than their children.

Yet, there is no way to divorce the spiritual from the celebration of Thanksgiving – at least not the way the Pilgrims envisioned it, a tradition dating back to the ancient Hebrews and their feasts of Succoth and Passover.

The Pilgrims came to America for one reason – to form a separate community in which they could worship God as they saw fit. They had fled England because King James I was persecuting those who did not recognize the Church of England's absolute civil and spiritual authority.

On the two-month journey of 1620, William Bradford and the other elders wrote an extraordinary charter – the Mayflower Compact. Why was it extraordinary? Because it established just and equal laws for all members of their new community – believers and non-believers alike. Where did they get such revolutionary ideas? From the Bible, of course.

When the Pilgrims landed in the New World, they found a cold, rocky, barren, desolate wilderness. There were no friends to greet them, Bradford wrote. No houses to shelter them. No inns where they could refresh themselves. During the first winter, half the Pilgrims died of sickness or exposure – including Bradford's wife. Though life improved for the Pilgrims when spring came, they did not really prosper. Why? Once again, the textbooks don't tell the story, but Bradford's own journal does. The reason they didn't succeed initially is because they were practicing an early form of socialism.

The original contract the Pilgrims had with their merchant-sponsors in London called for everything they produced to go into a common store. Each member of the community was entitled to one common share. All of the land they cleared and the houses they built belonged to the community. Bradford, as governor, recognized the inherent problem with this collectivist system.

"The experience that was had in this common course and condition, tried sundry years ... that by taking away property, and bringing community into common wealth, would make them happy and flourishing – as if they were wiser than God," Bradford wrote. "For this community [so far as it was] was found to breed much confusion and discontent, and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort. For young men that were most able and fit for labor and service did repine that they should spend their time and strength to work for other men's wives and children without any recompense ... that was thought injustice."

What a surprise! Even back then people did not want to work without incentive. Bradford decided to assign a plot of land to each family to work and manage, thus turning loose the power of free enterprise. What was the result?

"This had very good success," wrote Bradford, "for it made all hands industrious, so as much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been."

As a result, the Pilgrims soon found they had more food than they could eat themselves. They set up trading posts and exchanged goods with the Indians. The profits allowed them to pay off their debts to the merchants in London much faster than expected. The success of the Plymouth colony thus attracted more Europeans and set off what we call the "Great Puritan Migration."

But it wasn't just an economic system that allowed the Pilgrims to prosper. It was their devotion to God and His laws. And that's what Thanksgiving is really all about. The Pilgrims recognized that everything we have is a gift from God – even our sorrows. Their Thanksgiving tradition was established to honor God and thank Him for His blessings and His grace.

Today we continue that tradition in my home – and I hope in yours. God bless you, God bless America, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Halloween!

Halloween is my favorite holiday, no doubt. It's so fun to dress up every year, even when everyone else thinks you're too old to be doing it. :P I have some wonderful pictures of all my friends dressing up. They were all so good this year! Normally at schools, you only get a handful of kids dressing up, because many think it's childish and stupid. But then again, all my friends and I act childish sometimes, but that's what makes the experience so fun and interesting! No one wants to grow up that fast! We might as well have some fun along the way.

Anyway, here's a sig I made for SOTW this week (which I now run :D). The theme is Halloween. I didn't really like it when I had finished making it, but now that I look back; it doesn't look to bad.

Homecoming Parade

The homecoming parade was a lot shorter than I expected it to be, but it was so much fun. In my opinion, we were the only group of people that was there for something they believed in. Sure, there were the cheerleaders and the football team, which homecoming is based on, but then there were the typical clubs like the Italian-American club (which barely anyone showed up to march with for some reason) and the Steppers and the Spanish-American club and such. I was so proud of all of us, because we finally got involved with school activities. :) Here's some pictures of our glorious achievement.

It's kind of difficult to tell, but this is a picture of Mickey from Fantasia controlling all of the brooms to do his chores for him. (We were all supposed to wear tye dye as well... but that didn't turn out so well.)

I went to a concert yesterday at Jones Beach in Long Island, and it was AMAZING. :D It was my first concert and I really enjoyed it. I think I might write a fanfiction based on it. :P Anyways, my friend and I arrived late, so we missed Testament and Motor Head, but we were really only there to see Judas Priests, so it was alright. Black Sabbath was good, but they played VERY loudly. When they played low notes, the whole stadium vibrated and it makes you dizzy. @.@ Priests was AMAZING. :D It was so much fun to watch them get into the music, and they also would hold the mike out and have us sing. It was great. :) I can't wait to go to another concert. ^^

I had gotten a hoodie while I was there, and I just have to share it. :D I LOVE it. :D
